Spring cleaning is underway in and around the home again. Windows are sparkling, cobwebs are disappearing and the lawn is getting prepped for another summer. In the midst of all the sweeping and shampooing, cleaning the garage door often gets overlooked. We get it, there’s a lot going on. Between work and focusing on your family, washing down the garage door is last on the list. We want to encourage you to make time for this important chore.
Check out why…
When maintenance and proper care are observed, your garage door should have a life span of about 20 years. Washing it on a regular basis, (twice a year is recommended) helps protect your investment and extend its life.
Your door is exposed to all kinds of elements-sun, rain, snow, wind-after a while, they can take a toll on your door and affect the finish. Washing on a regular basis helps to protect the finish from erosion and rust. If you have a wooden door, you should also be refinishing the surface every so often, besides keeping it clean. Keep your door from going dull and maintain its outer look.
Is your home for sale? A good wash is essential for curb appeal! If your lawn is beautiful and your homes exterior on point, you don’t want that marred by a dull looking garage door. Keep that door sparkling and the overall look seamless.
We live in an area that, come winter, gets treated with salt fairly regularly. Keep rust and erosion, (and possible repair bills), at bay by keeping your door clean.
A clean door lets you see any damage more clearly. As you wash the exterior, take a moment to inspect the interior. Look over the track, springs and motion sensors. Check for dings or scrapes on the door that could get worse. When you notice problems sooner, they can be addressed in a timely manner.
Time to Wash!
A mild cleaning solution is best for most finishes. Dish or car wash soap will do well to get off the dirt and grime. Mix 1 cup soap with 2 gallons of water. NEVER add bleach, as that could ruin a doors finish.
Choose non-abrasive sponges or a soft cloth. Opt out of using rags or used clothing as they may already have grease or other cleaning products on them. Have some clean cloths on hand for drying as well.
You may need a small step ladder to reach the top of the garage. Make sure it’s sturdy!
Start from top and work your way down. Don’t be afraid to put some elbow grease into it. Make sure to really concentrate on the lower portion that gets exposed to most of the grime.
Hose the surface gently to remove all that dirt. Don’t be tempted to use a pressure washer, you could really damage the finish that way.
Enjoy your spotless door and let our staff know if it’s time for a routine maintenance appointment.
